Drinking Alcohol Harms IVF Success RaMen can also see their hopes of fathering a child dashed by just a daily beer, a study from Harvard Medical School has revealed.

If both partners drink, the study claims their chances of a live birth fall by up to 26%.

The Boston-based experts asked over 2,500 couples how much they drank and what type of alcohol they liked before they embarked on IVF.

Dr Brooke Rossi, who led the study, said men and women who each had six UK-equivalent units a week or more "significantly reduced their likelihood of pregnancy".

Women who drink white wine and men who drink beer are more likely to encounter problems conceiving, the study said.

Drinking just one to nine units of white wine a week meant women lost almost a quarter of their chances of a successful conception in the observed group.

Mohamed Menabawey, Medical Director at London-based IVF clinic The Bridge, said: "We place very high importance on our Mind/Body approach to IVF which is very strongly against drinking and smoking.

"There are other factors to take into account as well, weight and diet being just two, but our advice to women of all ages is that drinking at any level is unlikely to be compatible with IVF success."
