Junk food ups diabetes in kids

May 19, 2010 |11:04 | Junk Food  By : Team X

A group of more than 100 diabetes experts has called for laws to ban ads of junk food that target children. The experts from Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh said that this was the best alternative for combating the rising cases of Type 2 diabetes amongst youngsters – which is caused by obesity.

They said that these ads should not just be banned in print, but in billboards and TV too. In January 2008, a total ban on adverts for unhealthy food and drink products around TV programmes for under-16s came into force. The group also called for tighter regulations of the food, drink and catering industry following their meeting last week.

"Rates of obesity and diabetes are increasing at alarming rates and pose one of the most serious health challenges of this time,” the Scotsman quoted Dr Scott Ramsay, lead organiser of the event, as saying. "In response to this, diabetes experts from across the UK have come together to call on the Scottish and UK governments to demonstrate greater leadership in tackling this crisis.

May 4, 2010 |13:11 | Junk Food  By : Team X

Now that Finals Week is beginning and the stress is piling on, students are raiding their cabinets in search of their favorite study buddy: food. Stress and eating go hand in hand, so students stock up on food to prepare for the most stressful week of the college year.

Junk food seems the be the most popular choices for students. "I love chips," said Justin Adkins, a senior accounting major at West Virginia University. "I know it’s not very healthy, but they’re so good and easy to snack on while I’m studying. I don’t have to take time to fix anything."

While some students opt for easy snack foods, others take a break from studying to enjoy an actual meal in-between studying. "I eat a can of tuna," said Seth Hoblitzell, a senior nursing major. "I’m still a college student just studying, so I’m eating on a budget. I’ll be able to pay for the steak later."

November 2, 2009 |11:59 | Junk Food  By : Team X

How junk food diet can give you depressionEating junk food can make you depressed, doctors have warned. Those who regularly eat high-fat foods, processed meals, desserts and sweets are almost 60 per cent more likely to suffer depression than those who choose fruit, vegetables and fish.

Researchers claim their study is the first to investigate the link between overall diet and mental health, rather than the effects of individual foods. Dr Eric Brunner, one of the researchers from University College London, said:

'There seem to be various aspects of lifestyle such as taking exercise which also matter, but it appears that diet is playing an independent role.'

The study, in the British Journal of Psychiatry, used data on 3,486 male and female civil servants aged around 55.  Each participant completed a questionnaire about their eating habits and a self-report assessment for depression five years later.
