Mental health plan of oppn crazy

July 1, 2010 |12:53 | Other  By : Team X

Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon has labelled the coalition 'crazy' for funding its mental health policy by scrapping Labor health reforms in general practice and record keeping. Opposition Leader Tony Abbott announced the $1.5 billion policy on Wednesday, drawing praise from high-profile government critics including Australian of the Year Patrick McGorry, and John Mendoza, who quit the National Advisory Council on Mental Health in June.

Ms Roxon said the coalition's policy was undermined by the fact it was funded by cutting Labor's health reforms, such as GP super clinics and e-health reforms. It just seems to me to be a crazy way to fund what might otherwise be a worthy proposal,' she told Sky News on Thursday. Ms Roxon said she had no issue with the view that more needed to be done on mental health.

Junk food ads contribute to 40% of childhood obesity

June 15, 2010 |12:30 | Other  By : Team X

Many of us remember watching children’s TV as youngsters and eagerly awaiting the advert breaks. Images of toys we wanted, or foods we desired, flashed up on the screen to our delight. These junk food adverts were a lot of fun, but were they good for us? Experts believe not. For years, many have been claiming that junk food advertising is responsible for high childhood obesity levels. Now, new research backs their claims up.

An extensive study carried out by researchers from University College London examined the impact of junk food advertising on childhood obesity right across the world – from Australia and the US, to Europe. They reached the conclusion that in Europe junk food adverts could be responsible for up to 18% of obesity cases among children. In the US the effect was even greater. There the researchers say that junk food advertising could contribute to 40% of childhood obesity cases.

Restricting junk food ads Campaigners argue that the logical step for governments to take upon viewing these figures would be to impose tighter restrictions on junk food adverts. Some boundaries are already in place. In the UK the Children’s Food Bill now prevents companies from advertising between children’s programmes.

Grapes May Help Heart, Cut Diabetes

Grapes May Help Heart, Cut Diabetes

Eating grapes could lower the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, according to a study at the University of Michigan. Researchers studied how eating grapes affected rats. A powder made from red, green and black grapes was mixed into the animals' food, which was meant to mimic a high-fat diet common in the U.S.

After three months, rats that received the grape-enriched diet had lower blood pressure, better heart function and reduced indicators of inflammation in the heart and the blood than rats who received no grape powder. The effects were seen even though the grape-fed animals had no change in body weight.

Results seen in animals do not always translate into people, but researchers were optimistic. "The possible reasoning behind the lessening of metabolic syndrome is that the phytochemicals were active in protecting the heart cells from the damaging effects of metabolic syndrome," said Dr. Steven Bolling.

Healthy food from healthy soil

Local food growers want people to get better acquainted with how the edibles they consume are actually produced. During a panel discussion at Illinois Valley Community College to celebrate Earth Day Thursday, growers discussed their businesses and how local foods, particularly those grown without pesticides and other chemicals, can be better for consumer health and the environment.

"Our position is healthy food from healthy soil," said Jim Foxvog, part of Plow Creek Farm in Tiskilwa. "There are certain health benefits from eating organic-type foods, but the greatest benefit is to the earth and the people who work on farms."

Gerard Beach, owner of Foothills Organics in Utica, agreed. When both his parents and in-laws were diagnosed with cancer, he began to wonder what the connection was between the high percentage of chemicals likely found in their diets and their illnesses.

Should there be a Junk Food Tax?

April 20, 2010 |14:31 | Other  By : Team X

Should there be a Junk Food TaxDespite the medical profession"s best efforts, obesity rates are still staggeringly high around the globe. While there is some evidence to suggest.

That obesity rates are beginning to plateau in the US, there is no sign that obesity rates are declining, and in North America we still face a situation where the majority of adults are overweight.

As such, governments around the world are scrambling to find a way to help combat obesity. One tactic that is being discussed in many countries is whether or not to institute a tax.

On unhealthy foods, to encourage people to purchase healthier choices instead. A parallel is often drawn with anti-smoking campaigns.

Can Diet Lower Alzheimer's Risk?

April 16, 2010 |11:55 | Other  By : Team X

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia among the elderly, affecting an estimated 5 million Americans. Unless some type of cure or prevention is found, that number may increase to 14 million by 2050, experts say.

A recent study shows modifying your diet may be one way to decrease your chances of suffering the devastating disease. People who eat a diet consisting of more salad dressing, nuts, fish, poultry, and certain fruits and vegetables, as well as fewer high-fat dairy products, red meats, organ meats and butter appear less likely to develop Alzheimer's.
