Body Disorder - Understanding BDD & Its Symptoms

Posted in : Body disorder

(added last year!)

Body Disorder, better known as Body Dysmorphic Disorder is characterized by a condition revolving around obsessions, compulsions and avoidance behavioral problems. Self imposed constant consciousness related to ones own physical attributes is what happens to one going through this disorder.

1. Overly Obsessed

Just as disorders like anorexia or other eating disorders, which are a by-product of low self esteem, social stigma and societal pressure. BDD in the same way, plays tough on the psyche of people striving to attain awfully unrealistic elements in their personality which is a natural extension of being totally uncomfortable with their existing personalities. They may always be under a constant scan, being overly obsessed about their appearance. There are thoughts that keep hounding of being super-duper-ugly, that they'll hardly be worth a notice! The confidence levels drop down drastically that inferiority complex gets ridden over completely on such people, and therefore to move around in social groups is an excessively difficult task for them. Body Disorder has also been termed as 'imagined ugliness.' The contemporary surgery spree to beautify ones personality; all aim towards how greatly this disorder is spreading multifold.

2. Compulsive to the Core

Compulsive behavior is mostly a way to vent out accumulated distressed thoughts related to the inferiority spot. Overly repetitive tendency drain out an individual's energy. The example could be admonished in humor about the general characteristic of women displaying their compulsive nature when just about to set out for a party, and constantly be in doubt whether or not, is she rightly dressed? If she's looking fine? The footwear's matching right with the dress....so on and so forth. The same tendency when goes out of control and begins to intrude with daily life is clear of Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

3. Avoiding Behavioral Problems:

As discussed right above, obsessions and compulsions make a person utterly unconfident, owing to the same, a person has little rather absolutely no interest left in socializing. Such a person is prone to become indifferent, apathetic, uninterested. A recluse behavior is observed.

In totality, BDD emits obsessive ideas, compulsive behavioral patterns and avoidance in general. The greater the obsession rules over ones head, more is the avoidance is observed. Self Esteem is the one thing that is totally at stake in this disorder.

Causes of Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Pin-pointing the exact cause of Body Dysmorphic Disorder is hard to hit. But the possible causes leading to the arising of such a situation can be attributed to the following reasons:

• Experts state that the problem is rooted in the 'serotoninserotonin' - one of the nervous system transmitters. Poor functioning of the same results in BDD symptoms
• People commonly reported of hypertension, too much anxiousness are prone to this disorder
• Messages transmitted by the media plays a vital role on the psyche of people. Critical ideas culturally packed to intrude into the walls of civilization are paralyzing to the emotionality and sensitivity of individuals. Such ideas inevitably grow on the minds of individual, depending on to what extent are they susceptible to outer influence.
